The Last Trimester

Six months down, and three to go until it’s baby time!

I went to the doctor for a checkup on Wednesday and to take my gestational diabetes test. I passed with flying colors. They said I have excellent hemoglobin and insulin levels – I don’t know what that means exactly, but I’ll take “excellent” anytime. My weight is pretty much on track, so that’s good too.

I continue to battle sciatica. But other than that, life is grand. : )

We’re Having a Boy!

I had my first sonogram today, and I have to say, it was pretty cool. We learned many things and had a chance to see our little guy go through quite a workout. That’s right, I said little guy! : )

Everything looked good – heart, kidneys, brain, lips, tummy, feet and hands. The baby waved at us once, and then kicked the technician every time she pushed down to get him to move. It was pretty funny … I told Brandon we were bound to get a rebellious teen. She estimated that he weighs around 9 ounces right now.

After all of the official measurements, they were able to give me a more accurate due date: February 23.

Second Doctor’s Appointment

Brandon and I went in for my second doctor’s appointment today. Both of us were excited, hoping we’d be able to find out if it’s a girl or a boy, and really wanting to hear the heart beat again.

Everything went well at the appointment! I’m progressing normally – I’ve gained 9 pounds (yikes!), my blood pressure reading was nearly identical to last visit’s reading, and I may not be quite as far along as they thought (potentially a week or two later than they were thinking) … maybe it will be a Valentine’s Day baby!

Because we really do want to know the sex, the doctor recommended that we wait until next month’s appointment to do my sonogram. She said it would help increase our chances of being able to tell, and that we’ll be able to get an accurate due date. The doctor also said that she’d place her bet on it being a girl because the baby’s heart rate has been so high: 160 bpm last time, 170 bpm this time.

I have been having some problems lately with my sciatic nerve … it’s been a real pain in the ass. I guess the baby sort of pushes down on it and pinches it some. It gets so bad that I can’t sit down or lay on my back without shocks of pain. The doctor recommended that I start going to a physical therapist, chiropractor or a massage therapist. I’m going to make a call in the morning.

First Doctor’s Appointment

Brandon and I went to our first pregnancy doctor’s appointment today. I was a little nervous going in – I had no idea of what to expect. I knew there was a chance that we’d be able to hear the heartbeat, but I wasn’t really counting on it, because I didn’t think I was far enough along.

For the best I could tell, I figured I was at about 8 weeks. Turns out, it’s more like 11 weeks … so we were able to hear the heart beat! It was amazing, so fast and strong!

According to the nurse mid-wife’s best calculations, the due date is February 5th.
